5/26/14 KNBA News - Residents are evacuated as Funny River wildfire grows to 156,000 acres

Residents of the Funny River and Skilak communities were evacuated Sunday, while others were put on alert to be ready to evacuate if needed as high winds and dry conditions drive the Funny River wildfire. Two helicopters and four water-scooping air tankers, and 589 firefighters are fighting the fire. Along with dozens of individual volunteers and the Red Cross, businesses are helping evacuees. Federal, state, and local agencies are also responding.

The Tyonek wildfire has grown to 1,900 acres, and crews there are mopping up hot spots and patrolling the perimeter as resources are diverted to fight the Funny River fire.

Memorial Day observances will be held on the Delaney Park strip at 9th and I, at the Anchorage Municipal Cemetary, the Fort Richardson National Cemetary, and at the Veterans Wall of Honor in Wasilla.
