Anchorage, AK – The Army Corps of Engineers is taking public comment on a proposed road to Umiat. The road is to access oil and gas development in the Brooks Range foothalls and Arctic National Petroleum Reserve. Anaktuvuk Pass Mayor Esther Hugo says increased access to fish and game in the region will interfere with an ancient subsistence lifestyle. Alaska Peninsula seiners skip opening to maximize future red salmon returns. The White House establishes a Rural Council.
