The Walkmen began an "extreme hiatus" back in November, after 13 years together. An assortment of solo albums soon followed: Peter Matthew Bauer released Liberation! and Walter Martin made an album of music for kids.

Black Hours is the solo debut of lead singer Hamilton Leithauser. As the voice of The Walkmen, it's easy to compare Hamilton's work to the band's. But Leithauser has a different sound palette for his solo work on this record, which in some ways echoes Frank Sinatra' In the Wee Small Hours in structure. Here, World Cafe speaks with Leithauser and plays some stage performances that feature his wife's vocals.
