June 17, 2016 - Weekend's Eklutna Powwow to Feature Music, Arts and Crafts Sales, and Native Foods

The Native Village of Eklutna is hosting an intertribal powwow this weekend [June 18-19, 2016] at mile 26.5 on the Glenn Highway. Eklutna First Chief and President Lee Stephan says people will be able to enjoy singing and dancing by several Alaska Native cultures.

“Dance groups: We’ll have Inupiat, Yup’ik, Athabascan, Aleut and Tlingit,” said Stephan.

Stephan invites people to bring side dishes for a potluck meal at 2:30 p.m.both days where people can get a taste of Native subsistence foods.

"King salmon, red salmon, moose meat,” said Stephan, “and hopefully muktuk and herring eggs and deer, and whatever else can come from throughout Alaska.”

The Eklutna Powwow will also include raffle drawings, and sales of arts and crafts, as well as a dance for youth Saturday beginning at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 per car. Gates open at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Organizers ask participants to leave their pets at home.
