Gov. Bill Walker, rally-goers urge Legislative vote on Medicaid expansion

Governor Bill Walker spoke at a rally Thursday in favor of Medicaid expansion outside the capital in Juneau. As KSKA’s Zachariah Hughes reports, the event is another strategy from the administration to get lawmakers to bring the issue to a vote in the Legislature.

Standing on the capital steps in an on-again, off-again drizzle, Anica Ord of Juneau said that as a recent college graduate she falls into the coverage donut hole for health insurance that expanded Medicaid would fill.

Kwethluk tanks hold a 2-week supply of water. The entire system, which includes the tanks, a water treatment plant, sewage lagoon, and pipes cost $45 million, which is at the high end. In comparison, Pitka's Point's system was $12 million.

4/15/15 - State House passes bill on regulation of marijuana

Bill would give Alcoholic Beverages Control Board oversight of marijuana

A bill that is fundamental to setting up legal regulations for Alaska's marijuana passed the House Tuesday [April 14, 2015]. The bipartisan vote is a step towards the Alcoholic Beverages Control Board establishing a permit structure that oversees a full legal market, from growers to commercial sales.

4/14/15 - Alaska House Finance says Medicaid reform is needed before expansion

Medicaid reform bill introduced in last week of Legislative session

The House Finance Committee has introduced legislation focused on reforming Alaska's Medicaid program. Committee co-chair Steve Thompson said members have said they want to see changes made to the Medicaid program before they feel comfortable with passing expansion. He said the new bill is intended to get that discussion started. The Legislature is scheduled to adjourn on Sunday.
