11/17/14 - Gov. Sean Parnell concedes race to Bill Walker

Walker leads with 4,634 more votes than Parnell

Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell has conceded in the state's gubernatorial race. He issued a statement Saturday, after the Associated Press named Bill Walker the winner Friday evening. A count by the Division of Elections Friday showed Walker with 4,634 more votes than Parnell. About 10,000 absentee ballots remain to be counted.

Parnell wrote on Facebook Saturday he'd met with Walker and offered him office space to help with the transition. Walker is scheduled to be sworn in on Dec. 1.

10/27/14 - Lawsuit brings release of 2010 emails to Governor's office about Guard misconduct

Emails describe chaplain's concerns, fears about Alaska National Guard leadership

The Department of Law has begun releasing records about the Governor's Office's response to complaints in 2010 about sexual assault and other misconduct in the Alaska National Guard. Their search turned up more than 10,000 records that require legal review. But the first batch to be released is made up of just a few personal e-mails to and from Gov. Sean Parnell's chief of staff Mike Nizich.

10/22/14 - Gov. Sean Parnell fires three top National Guard leaders

"Scathing" report leads to Alaska National Guard firings

Three leaders of the Alaska National Guard have been fired from their positions. The removal of Brig. Generals Catherine Jorgensen and Donald Wenke, and Col. Edith Grunwald was announced Monday night. Gov. Sean Parnell says the firings are related to the results of an investigation by the National Guard Bureau's Office of Complex Investigations, which were  released in September. The report described cronyism, fraud, and the mishandling of sexual assault cases.

10/20/14 - U.S. Supreme Court allows Alaska same-sex marriages to go forward

Same-sex marriage legal again in Alaska.  The U.S. Supreme Court denied the state a stay that would have halted the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples until the 9th Circuit Court heard the state's appeal early next year.  The Alaska District Court overturned the state's same-sex marriage ban on Sept. 12. Couples began applying for licenses on a week ago Monday and three couples were allowed to wed immediately.

10/16/14 - Gay marriage in Alaska temporarily halted

Repeal of Alaska's ban on same-sex marriage now goes to U.S. Supreme Court

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has issued a temporary halt to gay marriages in Alaska. The federal appeals court in San Francisco issued the stay late Wednesday, giving the state of Alaska until Friday to get a stay from the U.S. Supreme Court. Otherwise the federal court action dissolves at 11 a.m. Friday, when gay marriages in Alaska will be allowed to go forward.
