10/22/14 - Gov. Sean Parnell fires three top National Guard leaders

"Scathing" report leads to Alaska National Guard firings

Three leaders of the Alaska National Guard have been fired from their positions. The removal of Brig. Generals Catherine Jorgensen and Donald Wenke, and Col. Edith Grunwald was announced Monday night. Gov. Sean Parnell says the firings are related to the results of an investigation by the National Guard Bureau's Office of Complex Investigations, which were  released in September. The report described cronyism, fraud, and the mishandling of sexual assault cases.

10/20/14 - U.S. Supreme Court allows Alaska same-sex marriages to go forward

Same-sex marriage legal again in Alaska.  The U.S. Supreme Court denied the state a stay that would have halted the issuance of marriage licenses to same-sex couples until the 9th Circuit Court heard the state's appeal early next year.  The Alaska District Court overturned the state's same-sex marriage ban on Sept. 12. Couples began applying for licenses on a week ago Monday and three couples were allowed to wed immediately.

10/16/14 - Gay marriage in Alaska temporarily halted

Repeal of Alaska's ban on same-sex marriage now goes to U.S. Supreme Court

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has issued a temporary halt to gay marriages in Alaska. The federal appeals court in San Francisco issued the stay late Wednesday, giving the state of Alaska until Friday to get a stay from the U.S. Supreme Court. Otherwise the federal court action dissolves at 11 a.m. Friday, when gay marriages in Alaska will be allowed to go forward.

9/5/14 KNBA News - Report shows Alaska National Guard mishandled sexual assault, other complaints

A scathing report into allegations of sexual assault in the Alaska National Guard finds victims lack confidence in leadership, and fear retaliation for reporting misconduct. At Governor Sean Parnell's request in February, the National Guard Bureau Office of Complex Investigations reviewed documents going back several years and interviewed hundreds of guard members. Investigators found the Guard lacked standard procedures for handling complaints about sexual assault, misconduct, and hostile work environments.

4/30/14 KNBA News - BP pipeline spews oily mist over 27 acres of North Slope tundra

BP is working to assess repairs needed to a leaky North Slope pipeline that sprayed natural gas and water containing crude oil over 27 acres of snow-covered tundra.

Gov. Sean Parnell says he was concerned about charges of misconduct in the Alaska National Guard in 2010, but lacked the specific information needed to act until this February, when he called for a federal investigation.
