11/6/10 Santa visits remote St. Paul Island in the Pribilofs

Anchorage, AK – Festivities included a visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus, gifts and books for children up to age 18, dinner, and live music by the Air Force Band of the Pacific. For many of the children, it was the first time they'd ever had soft ice cream sundaes, supplied by the Anchorage Tastee Freeze. The food, books and gifts were all donated. About 75 volunteers helped out during the event, as well as maybe a dozen Alaska National guardsmen, Army soldiers, and Air Force airmen.

Fatty acids in fish - supplements don't work as well as the real thing 11/4/10

Anchorage, AK – Six-year-old Hayden Martin died in a Wasilla home. A man with a long record of driving while under the influence of alcohol has been arrested in connection to a four-car pileup in East Anchorage. The chemical equivalent of a fatty acid found in fish isn't equal to the real thing in preventing dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Farmed impacts to wild fish and environment grow along with skyrocketing industry 10/29/10

Anchorage, AK – University of Victoria researchers looked at several measures to determine the global environmental impacts of fish farming. Criteria included escapement rates, energy use, oxygen demand, waste, and discharges of pesticides, parasitides, and antibiotics. The results show fism farms harm the environment and put pressure on wild fish stocks. Meanwhile, the industry is growing by leaps and bounds in countries with the least regulation and enforcement.

Evaluation finds Dental Health Aide Therapists competent, respected 10/26/10

Anchorage, AK – An evaluation of the Dental Health Aide Therapist program shows they're compentent at everything from equipment sterilization and clinical techniques to patient communications. Dentists question the quality of care, and the validity of the evaluation. However, the therapists are providing care in rural Alaska, where dentists rarely venture. And patients are proud Alaska Natives are providing the care.
