Anchorage, AK – The tanker Renda is within a hundred nautical miles of Nome, where final plans are being reviewed for getting fuel from the tanker to shore using hoses. Designations of critical habitat and endangered species have not prevented the continued drop in the Cook Inlet Beluga Whale population. The population of 1,300 in the 1980s is now down to an estimated 284. A Hoonah man has been declared incompetant to stand trial for killing two police officers.
