Panel discusses history, legacy of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act

By Joaqlin Estus

Anchorage, AK – After Statehood in 1959, the state began selecting lands, some long used by Natives. Oil companies wanted clear title to lands needed to build a pipeline and transport oil across Alaska. Alaska Natives organized and lobbied Congress for settlement. Leaders of the movement describe the movement, and honor two of their own. Two of the speakers say they have mixed feelings about the corporations.
